In a birth chart, planets are the actors and zodiac signs are the costumes they wear — but the houses are the stage. There are twelve of them, each governing a specific arena of life, and a planet's meaning changes completely depending on which house it stands in. Understanding the houses is the single most useful thing you can learn for reading any chart.
Here's what each house (Bhava, in Vedic terms) governs.
House 1 — Self (Lagna / Ascendant)
Your body, appearance, temperament, vitality and the lens through which you meet the world. The most important house in the chart; everything else is measured from it. Planets here strongly shape your personality.
House 2 — Wealth & Speech
Accumulated wealth, savings, family, food, and your voice and speech. Also values — what you consider worth having. A strong 2nd house supports financial security and eloquence.
House 3 — Courage & Communication
Siblings (especially younger), courage, initiative, short journeys, hobbies, and communication skills. The house of self-effort and the will to act. Writers, marketers and communicators often have an active 3rd.
House 4 — Home & Heart
Mother, home, property, vehicles, inner peace and emotional foundations. The "roots" house — your sense of belonging and security. Also education in the sense of foundational learning.
House 5 — Creativity & Children
Children, creativity, romance, intelligence, speculation and past-life merit (purva punya). The house of what you create — offspring, art, ideas. Also playfulness and self-expression.
House 6 — Health & Service
Illness, enemies, debts, daily work, service and obstacles. It sounds negative, but a strong 6th gives you the power to overcome enemies and disease — it's the house of resilience and hard work.
House 7 — Partnership & Marriage
Marriage, spouse, business partnerships and open relationships. The point directly opposite the self — it's about the "other." Everything to do with committed one-to-one partnership is read here.
House 8 — Transformation & the Hidden
Longevity, sudden events, inheritance, the occult, and deep transformation. The most misunderstood house — it governs crises and endings, yes, but also rebirth, research, intimacy and hidden knowledge. Astrologers and researchers often have a strong 8th.
House 9 — Fortune & Dharma
Luck, higher learning, philosophy, religion, long journeys, the father (in Vedic) and your guru or teachers. The most auspicious house — it's about meaning, wisdom and grace. A strong 9th is one of the best things a chart can have.
House 10 — Career & Status
Career, public reputation, authority, and your action in the world. The highest point of the chart, associated with what you're known for. Planets here shape your professional path and public standing.
House 11 — Gains & Networks
Income, gains, ambitions fulfilled, elder siblings, and social networks and friends. The house of receiving — where your efforts pay off. A strong 11th supports wealth flow and influential connections.
House 12 — Loss & Liberation
Expenditure, loss, isolation, foreign lands, sleep, and spiritual liberation (moksha). The final house — it governs what you let go of. Both losses/expenses and the deepest spiritual release live here, which is why monks and mystics often have a strong 12th.
How to use this
When any question arises, find its house, then look at three things:
- The sign on that house (its flavour)
- Any planets sitting in it (direct influences)
- The house lord — the planet ruling that house's sign, and where it sits (the connection to other life areas)
That three-step read turns the house map above into a personalised story about your life.
